Screenwriter & Director
Crafting bold, unforgettable stories for screen and audio — from comedy dramas to thrillers. Based in London, Wales and working internationally.
Darragh Mortell is a screenwriter and director from Wales whose award-winning work often explores mixed-race identity and small-town mentality, blending various genres in order to tell the most impactful story.
A proud Newportonian, Darragh's career began at the mere age of twelve, appearing for many years as Crash on the children's TV hit The Story of Tracy Beaker. He went on to appear in many other mainstream UK television productions such as Dani's House, Dubplate Drama, The Bill, and DCI Banks. Through his acting, Darragh gained fifteen years worth of experience on television sets which paid dividends when, in 2017, he decided to pursue a career as a professional Writer and Director.
His career behind the camera (and laptop) spans nine years across short films, audio dramas and television. Darragh's debut audio drama I Am Kanye West won Best Audio Fiction at the prestigious Prix Europa Awards in 2020, which led to an invitation to the Writers Room, a non-broadcast pilot, and then a full series script commission for his original BBC3 Comedy, Sitters.
Darragh currently has multiple projects in development with a pilot that he wrote & directed, airing on the iPlayer in 2026 and an audio thriller series set for release on BBC Sounds. He is currently writing his debut feature film in conjunction with Ffilm Cymru and has worked with Tiger Aspect, Bad Wolf, Hillbilly Television and 5 Acts in the capacity of writer or director.
Great, tragi-humorous script — both edgy and hilarious.
